Heritage Statement for proposed installation of solar panels on Kingston Barn, Kingston Lane, Othery, Bridgwater, Somerset

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was instructed to carry out a Heritage Statement with regard to the installation of solar (photovoltaic) panels on the SW facing roof of Kingston Barn, a converted barn situated to the SE of Kingston Farmhouse, a Grade II listed building situated within the historic village of Othery (Somerset).

Combined Heritage Statement, Archaeological Assessment & Written Scheme of Investigation for a proposed development on the former Elkin Tyre site, Horsepond Land, Bridgwater, Somerset

AS Archaeology was commissioned to produce a Heritage Statement (including an Archaeological Assessment) & WSI regarding a planning application for a residential development of three terraced houses on the former Elkins Tyres Site, Horsepond Lane, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 3LG.

Written Scheme of Investigation for Conservation Management Plan Vicars’ Close, Wells, Somerset (Wells Cathedral)

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services has been commissioned to produce a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for the Vicars’ Close, Wells Cathedral Conservation Management Plan (CMP) delivery of archaeological & heritage services.
We are proud to have been appointed archaeological and heritage services provider for the CMP at Vicars’ Close which is a project of international importance. Our input over the 2 – 3 years of onsite work will be the recording of archaeological groundworks and Level 1 & 3 building recording (Historic England) for the buildings. The subsequent report will form a monograph which is expected 2 years post-completion of onsite work.

Written Scheme of Investigation for Ivy House, Friarn Street, Bridgwater, Somerset TA6 3LH

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services has been commissioned to produce a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for a proposed development on land to the rear of Ivy House, Friarn Street, Bridgwater, Somerset TA6 3LH.
Proposed development of a part two-storey, part three-storey, 3-unit HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupation) with 30 bedrooms (Sui Generis) and associated landscaping and parking on land to the rear of Ivy House. The site, footprint and materials had previously received planning permission which was granted for 13 flats.

Heritage Statement for King’s Hayes Batcombe Somerset BA4 6HF v.2

AS Archaeology was commissioned by Bindloss Lawes Architects produce a Heritage Statement with regard to a planning application for various internal and external repair/refurbishment works, the demolition of an existing rear conservatory and the addition of a new rear extension at King’s Hayes Batcombe Somerset BA4 6HF.

Heritage Statement for land to the W of Paulls Lane Broadway Somerset TA19 9RB (Nearest) v.3

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned Harrison Brown Blue Spruce Properties Ltd to produce a Heritage Statement in relation to a planning application for a residential development of 47 homes with associated vehicular access and landscaping on land to the W of Paulls Lane, Broadway, Ilminster, Somerset.

Desk Based Assessment for The Bridgwater Arms (Grade II Listed), St. Mary Street, Bridgwater, Somerset TA6 3EQ

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services ( was commissioned to carry out an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment with regard to a planning application for the proposed refurbishment and conversion of the Bridgwater Arms, 41 St Mary Street, Bridgwater, Somerset, a Grade II listed building of early 18th century date, into a café and studio flats with associated access and facilities and for the residential development of the rear plot. 
This desk-based assessment should be read in conjunction with the heritage Statement previously submitted as part of this proposal.

Written Scheme of Investigation a proposed development at Mill Farm, Mill Lane, Misterton, Crewkerne TA18 7RZ

The planning application received full approval (24/01555/FUL) on Tuesday 19 November 2024 with planning conditions. Outline planning permission was approved for the demolition of existing agricultural building and erection of 2 (two) link-detached dwellings (change of use previously approved by (22/1659/PAMB) with associated works to form access, parking & garden.

Desk Based Assessment for Land West of Park Lane Whitelackington Somerset TA19 0QT (nearest)

AS Archaeology has been commissioned to undertake an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment with regard to a planning application for the formation of an agricultural fertiliser storage lagoon on land west of Park Lane, Whitelackington, Somerset.

Desk Based Assessment for land to the east of Wooten Hill Cottage, Ford Lane, Litton, Somerset BA3 4RU

AS Archaeology has been commissioned by Kyle Stock of Hill.Reading Architects, Coach House Studio, 34A Chamberlain Street, Wells, Somerset BA5 2PJ to undertake an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment with regard to a planning application for the construction of a Dutch barn on land to the East of Wooten Hill Cottage, Ford Lane, Litton, BA3 4RU.

Written Scheme of Investigation – 1 Market Street, Yeovil, Somerset

A written scheme of investigation (WSI) for a proposed conversion of a Grade II listed building located within the known medieval area of Yeovil and NE extremity of the conservation area. The proposed development was for change of use from commercial to domestic. The development included conversion of office and shop space to domestic dwellings with a rear extension demolition and new build dwelling to reflect the character and setting of not only the listed building but its historic environs.

Desk Based Assessment – Hazel Cottage, Top Hill, Upton Noble, Somerset

A desk based assessment was required for the proposed development at Hazel Cottage, Upton Noble, Somerset. The development was for the demolition of an outbuilding and replacement with a single dwelling. The proposal site is within the historic village centre with evidence for a deserted medieval village to the immediate N and S.

Desk Based Assessment – Coombe Lane, Shepton Mallet, Somerset

A desk based assessment was required for the proposed development of a parcel of land at Coombe Lane, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 5UD regarding a planning application for the construction of three new dwellings (units) on the site with associated car parking and landscaping works. The site originally formed part of a 19th century hospital and lays close to the Victorian Workhouse

Desk Based Assessment 

A desk based assessment was required for the proposed Class Q change of use/development at Meareway, Meare, Somerset. The proposal site was close to the scheduled area/site of the Iron Age Meare Lake village.

Written Scheme of Investigation for the erection of a self-build two storey dwelling in the rear garden of  Paddock House (Grade II listed building), Hurst, Martock, Somerset.

Heritage Statement and Written Scheme of Investigation

A combined Heritage Statement and Written Scheme of Investigation for the demolition of existing garages and outbuildings to the rear (NE) of The Old Tavern, Compton Dundon, Somerset a Grade II listed building and their replacement with a single storey domestic dwelling.

Written Scheme of Investigation

Written Scheme of Investigation for the erection of a self-build dwelling in the rear garden of Woodstock, The Green, Faulkland, Radstock BA3 5UZ. The proposal site is located on the northern fringes of the village of Faulkland, an historic linear settlement situated along the A366 road roughly 4km E of the town of Radstock (Somerset). Previous archaeological investigations in the vicinity of the site have revealed evidence of multi-period activity ranging in date from the prehistoric to the post-medieval period and the settlement is designated as an Area of High Archaeological Potential by the South West Heritage Trust.

Desk-Based Assessment

A Desk Based Assessment for submission with planning documents for a housing development of approximately 40 dwellings on land to the W of Stoke Road, Henlade, Somerset TA3 5FF. The overall archaeological potential of the proposed development site has been assessed as Moderate with particular reference to encountering archaeological deposits of Roman and post-medieval date; while the potential for prehistoric and medieval remains has been assessed as Low to Moderate.

Written Scheme of Investigation

The WSI has been produced as a requirement of planning condition which required a small 10m x 10m targeted excavation on an area identified from an earlier archaeological evaluation. The proposed development is for two dwellings on land to the rear of the recently redeveloped Ship Inn, Banwell, BS29 6DA.

Heritage Statement & Written Scheme of Investigation

Pre-planning application to infill existing yard to gain additional enclosed floor area for bakery at Burns the Bread, 14 High Street, Glastonbury, Somerset BA6 9DU

The site is situated on the S side of the High Street within the Glastonbury Conservation Area and an area of high archaeological and historic importance . The S boundary of the property is formed by the precinct wall of Glastonbury Abbey Scheduled Monument. Although the building is not listed or locally identified as a heritage asset the building was assessed as being an important component in the streetscape as it forms part of a group with several listing buildings along the S side of the High Street. 

The Heritage Statement was combined with a Written Scheme of Investigation as this was considered to be appropriate in these circumstances due to the proposals location and potential for groundworks to encounter underlying archaeological deposits associated with the abbey.

Conversion of outbuilding to self-contained dwelling at Haverson Barn, Winterhead, Bristol Road, Somerset BS25 1PP

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to produce a Written Scheme of Investigation for ‘Archaeological monitoring and recording’ associated with the conversion of an existing agricultural outbuilding into a one-bedroom home with attached cycle shed at Candleford Cottage, Winscombe, North Somerset BS25 1PP.

The work is being undertaken as a condition (No.11) of Planning Permission (North Somerset Council Planning Ref: 23/P/1934/FUL).

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was been commissioned by Capital Works Project Manager, Wells Cathedral to produce a Written Scheme of Investigation (Project Design) for the ‘Vicars’ Close Conservation Management Plan, Initial Delivery Phase’.

Heritage Assessment

Upper Battleborough Farm, Bristol Road, Brent Knoll, Somerset, TA9 4HJ

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to research and write a Heritage Assessment as part of a major planning application for the construction of a new building for indoor play area, café & farm shop with associated parking on land at Upper Battleborough Fm., Brent Knoll, Somerset. The development was to be located on the south east slopes of Brent Knoll. Brent Knoll is a Scheduled Monument of Iron Age and later date. In both archaeological and heritage terms the area is assessed as being of high archaeological importance. The heritage assessment considered the impact of the development on the visual heritage and underlying archaeology.

Rapid Archaeology & Heritage Appraisal

Moorside Farm, Broadbury, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 4LL

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to provide rapid/rebuttal statement for a Class Q development of an agricultural building to a single domestic dwelling at Okehampton, Devon. The proposed site is located within very close proximity to two Scheduled Ancient Monument’s, namely Bronze Age Bowl Barrows. The assessment looked at the potential impact of the development on the SM and the underlying archaeology. 

Heritage Statement 

Land to the South of Park Lane,  Langport, Somerset, TA10 0NF

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to provide a Heritage Statement for a project located in Langport,  Somerset (south-west) associated with a planning application for the construction of a private dwelling, pool and garage and formation of access track and associated landscape works. The proposed development site was in an area of high archaeological importance with particular reference for deposits of late Iron Age & Romano-British date. The site is located to the NW extent of a medieval Deer Park once owned by the Bishop of Wells. The proposal site includes areas of green field as well as established agricultural buildings.

Archaeological Written Scheme of Investigation

111 Brent Street,  Brent Knoll,  Highbridge, TA9 4EH

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to produce a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for the construction of two detached private dwellings with garages to the rear of 111 Brent St. Brent Knoll (near Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare) is an area of high archaeological potential with artefacts of Iron Age, Romano British and medieval recovered locally. The site is located in the hinterland between the W side of Brent Knoll Scheduled Monument and the Somerset Levels.

Archaeological Desk Based Assessment

Oakhill Cottage, Zion Hill, Oakhill, East Mendip, BA3 5AN

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to provide a Desk Based Assessment (DBA) as part of pre-planning documentation for construction of a garden annex in the NW corner of Oakhill Cottage, Oakhill, Somerset (East Mendip near Bath and Bristol). Historical research indicated that the garden had probably remained largely undisturbed since the 19th century, although some made-ground terracing may have taken place in the intervening period. Archaeological potential was assessed as being Low to Moderate. A watching brief was advised.

Bridgwater Arms, St. Mary Street,  Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 3EQ

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned provide a Heritage Statement to support a planning application for a proposal to re-develop the main building into a café with accommodation together flats to the rear. Bridgwater Arms is a Grade II listed building located in an area of high historic and archaeological importance. A Level 3 Historic England recording of features was recommended prior to development.

Polson Farm, Polson Bridge,  Nr. Launceston, Devon, PL15 9QU

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to carry out an Archaeological Desk Based Assessment regarding the proposed creation of a waterpark with the provision of associated infrastructure on land South of Polson Farm, Polson Bridge, Launceston, Devon PL15 9QU. The proposed development is located on the county border between Devon and Cornwall in south-west England.

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to write a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for the conversion of barns to holiday accommodation, demolition of a Dutch barn and general groundworks. The site is within an area of high archaeological potential with a probable Romano-British settlement within the locality. Batts Farm is located on the north Somerset Levels slightly south east of Cheddar

Heritage Statement

Slade House, Cheapside, Langport, Somerset, TA10 9PW

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to undertake a Heritage Statement with regard to a pre-planning application for the proposed conversion of the existing commercial premises at Slade House (Historic England Grade II Listed), Cheapside, Langport, Somerset into a contiguous domestic dwelling, by means of knocking through of parts of two internal walls, reinstating an external door to the rear of the property, adding two bathrooms and other internal refurbishment works. The HS discussed and assessed the impact of unauthorised building works already undertaken.

Bridie’s Farm, Glastonbury, Somerset, BA6 9QH

AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned by Matthew Green of ORME Architects, Mill Farm Barns, Tuckers Lane, Baltonsborough, Glastonbury BA6 8RH to produce a Heritage Assessment (HS) & Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for the proposed development of a ‘Food & Regenerative Farming Centre on land at Bridie’s Farm, Glastonbury’. The work is being undertaken as a condition of Planning Permission (Planning Ref: 2023/0715/FUL). The contract was to research and write a methodology that would minimise the potential impact of the proposed development on the Somerset Levels archaeological resource.

Proposed conversion of a late 19th -century Linhay barn outbuilding to form self-contained dwelling at Candleford Cottage, Bristol Road, Winscombe (near Bristol) Somerset. AS Archaeology was commissioned to complete a archaeological desk based assessment to evaluate the impact of the development on the surrounding landscape and assess potential for encountering archaeological deposits during groundworks.

101 Brent Street, Brent Knoll. AS Archaeology & Heritage Services was commissioned to write a written scheme of investigation (WSI) as a requirement of planning. Brent Knoll is an area of significant archaeological and historical importance, as such the potential for encountering undisturbed archaeological deposits was high. The WSI provided an onsite and post-excavation strategy that covered all eventualities.

Corner House (GII),  Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, TA11 6EG

AS Archaeology was asked to create a Heritage Statement for Corner House, Keinton Mandeville, Somerset. Grade II Listed Building. Proposed replacement of late 20th century conservatory with single storey ground floor extension. The impact on nearby heritage assets was important in the assessment of the impact the proposal might have on the historic environment.

Land at Pathe Farm Cottage, Othery, Somerset, TA7 0JF

AS Archaeology was asked to create a Heritage Statement for a proposed development of Land at Pathe Farm Cottage. The Sedgemoor 20112-2032 Plan allows for appropriate infill development of land subject to strict criteria. The land at Pathe lies on the edge of the Somerset Levels in an area of High Archaeological & Historical importance. Understanding the historic environment was key to this project and its possible impact on it. The report formed the rebuttal statement  for submission at appeal for refusal of planning permission.

Archaeological Watching Brief

Land to the East of Hillview Liney Road, Westonzoyland, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA7 0EU

Following completion of the WSI AS Archaeology & Heritage Services were present on site during all groundworks. Apart from some post-medieval sand quarry pits no archaeological features were identified.

Archaeological Desk Based Assessment

Land at Warren House,  North Petherton, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA7 0DT

AS Archaeology was asked to create an Archaeological Statement for a proposed development of Land at Warren House, near Bridgwater, Somerset. The proposed site is located within a small rural community accessed via a private road. The Archaeological Assessment considered the change of use of the land which had formed part of a deer park in the medieval period, and later manor house (GII Listed). The site is situated to the north of Taunton and slightly south of Bridgwater in the south west.

Heritage Statement

Land to north of 54 Monmouth Road, Westonzoyland, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA7 0HF

The historic environment within the geographic location of this land is of high importance in archaeological and historical terms. It lies close to a Registered Battlefield site and an area where significant prehistoric and Romano-British artefactual evidence has been recorded/discovered. As result the local heritage trust required as a condition of planning archaeological observation/watching brief during the groundworks stage . This is an ongoing project which is entering its third year with AS Archaeology (2023).

Heritage Statement

Land to the east of Huntworth House,  Huntworth, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA7 0AH

AS Archaeology was asked to create a Heritage Statement for a proposed development of Land to the east of Huntworth House had been refused at planning several times over the intervening years. The HS applied a fresh look at objections and land provided mitigating arguments and solutions for protecting the character and setting of the historic village of Huntworth. As result the planning application was successful and included suggestions for limiting the impact on the historic environment included in the heritage statement.

Heritage Statement

Avalon,  Downend Road, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 4TW

AS Archaeology was asked to create a Heritage Statement for a proposed erection of a Detached Bungalow and Detached Garage on Land at Avalon, Downend Road. The site lies in close proximity to a Scheduled Monument (Motte & Bailey Castle). The HS detailed historic and archaeological evidence and provided suggestion on appropriate archaeological interventions to ensure the historic environment both above and below ground was protected during development. In this case it was recommended that as a minimum an archaeological field evaluation was undertaken prior to development.

Heritage Statement/Archaeological Desk Based Assessment

39 Church Road, Wembdon, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 7RP

AS Archaeology was asked to create a Heritage Statement/Archaeological Assessment for a proposed erection of a bungalow partially on site of existing garage (to be demolished) at 39 Church Road, Wembdon. The site at Church Road is located within the curtilage of a medieval ecclesiastical enclosure. The HS/AA detailed both above and below ground heritage assets and provided advice regarding best practice during development of the site. The site is situated to the west of Bridgwater, Somerset on the Minehead road.

Land to the East of 45 Liney Road, Westonzoyland,  Somerset

Liney Road, Westonzoyland borders the Registered Battlefield Site for the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion. The WSI addressed heritage concerns regarding the potential for recovery of artefactual evidence associated with the battle. A metal detector survey was a requirement of the archaeological groundworks.

Muchelney Abbey, Muchelney,  Somerset

Muchelney Abbey is a Scheduled Monument, as such it is a heritage asset of the highest status. All groundworks require Scheduled Monument consent prior to commencement of works. The instruction for this project was received from Historic England/English Heritage as a requirement of upgrading works prior to the abbey opening for tourism.

Land to the East of Hillview, Liney Road,  Westonzoyland,  Somerset

Liney Road, Westonzoyland is situated to the SW (generally) of the Registered Battlefield Site of the Monmouth Rebellion 1685. As an important element of the written scheme of investigation (WSI) for this site was a metal detector survey, both prior to and during groundworks, to aid discovery of evidence for the Battle of Sedgemoor.
