Constructed between 1322 and 1335 by Adam de Sodbury, Abbot of Glastonbury, Meare Fish House, on the edge of the village of Meare on the Somerset Levels, is of exceptional historic importance as the only surviving example of a monastic fishery building in the United Kingdom. It is in the guardianship of English Heritage and is designated as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Built of Blue Lias stone, this fine building attests to the extensive exploitation of the resources of this wetland landscape during the medieval period by Glastonbury Abbey.
