What is a Heritage Statement?
A Heritage Statement is an essential document that outlines the distinctive features and values of a built heritage asset, such as a historic building or monument. This statement assesses how the asset’s architectural design and historical background contribute to its overall significance. Furthermore, it examines the asset’s relationship with its immediate surroundings, considering how it fits within the broader historic context.
Purpose and Scope of the Heritage Statement
The Heritage Statement provides a detailed analysis of how any proposed development might affect the asset. This includes evaluating potential impacts on the physical condition of the structure, its intrinsic value, and its contextual association with the wider historic environment.
When Is a Heritage Statement Required?
If your proposed development could alter the appearance or setting of a listed building, or a non-designated heritage asset—such as a structure included on a local list—or if the site is located within a Conservation Area, it is likely that a Heritage Statement will need to be submitted alongside your planning or pre-planning application.
Role in the Planning Process
The local planning authority will refer to your Heritage Statement to evaluate the likely effects of your proposed development on the historic environment. The document’s findings will inform the authority’s recommendations and any decisions made regarding your application.
