Meeting Planning Conditions Through Archaeological Services

Once you have submitted your planning application, you may be informed that, as a condition of your development, a programme of archaeological work is required. This programme must be supported by an approved Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI).

By engaging our archaeology and heritage services, we will ensure that your development fully satisfies these planning conditions. Our expertise streamlines the process, giving you peace of mind that all archaeological requirements associated with your planning application will be addressed.

The Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI)

The process typically begins with the preparation of a WSI, which is a key component of your supplementary planning documentation. The WSI outlines the terms, conditions and methodologies for the archaeological work, all of which are agreed upon with the local planning authority. This document ensures that the archaeological requirements outlined in your planning condition are clearly defined and will be met in accordance with the authority’s standards.

Types of Archaeological Interventions

The local authority heritage service, acting as an advisor to the planning department, will determine the specific type of archaeological intervention necessary for your site. This may include an evaluation, archaeological observation, or a full excavation. These investigations are described as intrusive because they involve physically digging into the ground to record and reconstruct the archaeology that is found. The process includes creating written records, collecting artefacts, and taking photographic documentation of any discoveries.

Additional Requirements and Our Support

Occasionally, other requirements such as a geophysical survey may arise. However, you need not worry about these details, as we are dedicated to ensuring that all your planning conditions—regardless of what is required—are fully satisfied and signed off by the local authority.

We will manage all aspects of the necessary archaeological work, ensuring that your planning conditions are comprehensively addressed and resolved.
